Anchor Health Properties Marks Grand Opening of Tampa General Hospital’s New 96 Bed Behavioral Health Hospital
Marking a significant step forward in addressing the growing need for comprehensive mental health services in the Tampa Bay area, Anchor proudly announces the completion of a new, state-of-the-art inpatient behavioral health hospital. This dynamic, patient-centric facility, spanning four-stories and approximately 83,000 square feet with 96 beds, was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 25, 2025, attended by local officials, health system leadership, and community members.
Developed in collaboration with Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the region's only university-level academic medical center, and Lifepoint Behavioral Health, a business unit of Lifepoint Health, the new hospital reflects a shared vision of expanding access to quality mental health care. Located at 1303 W. Kennedy Boulevard, the facility addresses the rising demand for specialized inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services in the community.
“We are honored to continue our partnership with Tampa General Hospital and Lifepoint Health, organizations that share our commitment to creating impactful, patient-centered healthcare facilities,” noted Will Foster, Senior Development Director with Anchor. “This project exemplifies how collaboration can drive meaningful change, providing communities with the resources they need to thrive. Alongside the full project team, we are delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will support a healthier, stronger future for the Tampa Bay area.”
Thoughtfully designed to create a healing and supportive environment for patients, services within the facility offer compassionate, comprehensive and intensive psychiatric treatment to children, adolescents, adults and seniors experiencing behavior and mental health conditions, especially those with complex conditions. Key features include semi-private rooms to enhance comfort and privacy, therapeutic outdoor spaces to promote relaxation and recovery, group therapy areas designed for collaboration and connection, and secure, modern spaces that prioritize patient and staff safety.
As Florida’s first behavioral health teaching hospital, the facility plays a vital role in the growing Tampa Medical and Research District. Through a partnership with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, it serves as a hub for advanced psychiatric care and medical education. Additionally, the behavioral health hospital is directly linked to Tampa General Hospital’s nationally recognized Neuroscience Institute, through which best-in-class physicians provide a full spectrum of care to patients of all ages suffering from neurological disorders.
Tampa General Hospital and Lifepoint Health directly engaged Anchor as the fee-for-service developer on this project. Tampa General Hospital provides key facility and medical support services, while Lifepoint Behavioral Health oversees daily operations of the behavioral health hospital.
The project team featured regionally based firms with extensive healthcare facility experience, including Stengel-Hill Architecture, a leading design firm in the behavioral healthcare industry, and JE Dunn Construction, one of the nation’s top 10 largest healthcare builders.
Strategically positioned adjacent to the TGH Rehabilitation Hospital, also developed by Anchor Health Properties, the facility began welcoming patients in March 2025.
